Eaglewood comes from the daphne family. In Japan, the spicier varieties from Vietnam and Cambodia are favoured. While the balsamic varieties from Assam are in demand in the West. Eaglewood is available in a very wide range of odours between balsamic-sweet and spicy-bitter. Only pieces of wood that have become resinous due to fungal infection, which have sometimes been fermented in the earth for centuries or have been left in water for several years, are suitable for use as scented wood for smoking. This resin is the actual fragrance of eaglewood.
This stimulates it to produce more resin. The core of the tree must be infected by a fungus, it is an extremely rare, precious and very fragrant incense wood. It is also known as aloe, paradise and rosewood. The Arabs call it ud or oud. It grows in the rain-rich primeval forests of India, Cambodia and Indonesia, and more rarely in Vietnam or Thailand. In Japan it is called jinko (Japanese for sinking wood, also known as fragrant wood).
The best qualities are dark brown in colour and sink in water. (Grade A, A/B and partly B = sinking quality), all other grades float and are cheaper. The Japanese distinguish between six types of jinko, whereby the price of well-fermented pieces, whose flavour has developed over time under the pressure of the earth, can sometimes exceed the price of gold. These are called kyara.
Even in ancient times, kings and queens used the fine wood to perfume their robes, hair and beards and scent their chambers with its rising smoke. In the Orient, eaglewood is regarded as a mystery that can be used to accompany and support the soul in its highest stages of development. It facilitates trance and the attainment of altered levels of consciousness and perception. It is said that sandalwood is the scent for beginners, while eaglewood is a jewel for initiates. In Egypt, it was used to invoke a favourable fate. If you carry it with you, it supports love. Today it is used as a strengthening agent in incense.
Eaglewood, Aqiloria angalocha, is now subject to the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and may only be imported with a cite. Sale is only permitted within the EU.
