Haematite
Also known as iron lustre, specularite, red ironstone and red iron ore. A very common mineral from the class of oxides and hydroxides. The mineral surfaces can tarnish or take on a matt red colour due to weathering. The name comes from the ancient Greek and means blood, bloodshed or blood relative. In ancient Egypt, it was used as a peace stone. It was placed under the head of the dead to make the journey to the afterlife easier. The ancient Babylonians used it to win a trial. Young girls used it to protect themselves from the evil eye and in dreams it warned of possible dangers. In ancient times, it was regarded as a bloodstone, as it ‘bleeds’ when cut and leaves bloodstains. If you scratch the stone and then rub your finger over it, you will no longer find the scratch.
Its energy is giving and is associated with the planet Saturn. It is associated with the element of fire. Its powers are grounding and divination.
